There are many options out there that treat infertility. Each woman will undergo a different procedure based on her health condition, her age, and her medical history. Usually, women who are 35 years or older will have a lower success rate with a higher chance of a miscarriage. This being said, women who are older must not lose hope. Finding the right doctor is the most important thing so that the success rates are higher.

The different types of fertility treatments are:

  1. Fertility drugs
  2. Surgery
  3. Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  4. In vitro fertilization (IVF)

All the procedures differ in the way they are operated with a different success rate for each. All four treatments are discussed below.

  1. Fertility Drugs

This is the most common way of regulating the hormones in a woman and releasing more than one egg for fertilization. Women are advised to take these drugs for three to six months and it becomes easy to conceive. There are side effects of taking these drugs which can include the conception of twins or more. Other side effects include mood swings, nausea, pelvic pain, depression, headaches and thick, dry mucus. The success rate is about 30 to 40% but it also depends on the age of the woman. Fertility drugs do not cost much and are easy to find at all pharmacies.

  1. Surgery

Doctors will recommend surgery to those who have any genetic defects. A surgery usually takes place to open blocked fallopian tubes, the treatment of PCOs, removing the tissue of endometriosis and to remove fibroids. After the surgery, a patient will feel discomfort in the shoulders and back. The woman can also suffer from a sore throat for a few days. The success rates are high when the treatment is done for the particular problem. Most woman can conceive within a few months after the surgery is performed.

  1. Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

This procedure involves the inserting of the sperm directly into the uterus with the use of a catheter. The patient will feel discomfort and cramping for a few days after the procedure is performed. The risks include the chances of conceiving twins or more. Other side effects will include mood swings and breast tenderness. The success rates are high for those couples who have no serious fertility issue.

  1. In vitro fertilization (IVF)

This procedure is the most expensive one of the four. The egg from the woman is taken out and fertilized by the sperm in a petri dish. A few days later, the egg which is now an embryo, is inserted back into the woman. More than one embryo is inserted into the uterus so the chances for one to settle become high. This again increases the chances of twins or more babies in a pregnancy. The side effects include cramping and some spotting after the egg is retrieved and after the embryo is inserted. The success rate is higher for a woman aged 34 years and under while the rate decreases as the age increases.

Consulting the doctor is the best way to begin a fertility treatment. Some doctor would every procedure is one is unsuccessful. The age of the woman plays an important role in conceiving a baby.
